2011 Fish Fest
Saturday June 25, 2011, the Doddridge County Middle
and Elementary School pond hosted the third annual “Fish Fest” fishing
tournament. The 7-½ acre pond provided 5 hours of excellent fishing accompanied
by beautiful weather. Fish Fest is part of West Union Fest, which will be
celebrated on Friday July 22 and Saturday 23, 2011.
In 2009 when the first tournament was held we had
13 participants, the second year we had 16 participants and this year we had 56
participants in the tournament. The participants ranged in age from 19 months to
78 years. All participants received T-shirts and were eligible for prizes in
four age groups. Prizes were youth fishing rods, fishing rods and reel
combinations, lures, assorted tackle, a tackle box, and a lamp. A total of 506
fish were checked in at the tournament. The species caught included 433
bluegill, 41 largemouth bass, 20 crappie, 10 bullhead (catfish), and 7 turtles.
All fish were released healthy back to the pond.
Trophies will be presented at the Wall of Honor on
Main Street during the West Union Fest on July 23, 2011. Among these will be
“Largest bass” going to Keith Britton, at a length of 13 1/4”, “Largest catfish”
to Christian Burge measuring 13 1/2” and the “Largest overall” trophy for the
same fish. Dalton Cork will receive the trophy for most fish caught with the
total of 71.
Participants are asked to be in the West Union Fest
Parade on July 22, 2011. Lineup for the parade is at 6:00 P.M. at the football
field. We are planning to ride on a truck and boat. Be sure to wear your shirts.
We will have a booth at West Union Fest on July 23,
2011 with the results of the tournament featuring pictures taken by photographer
Rennie Brown. You can view and download the pictures on
Facebook (look for Fishfest) or go to www.westunionfest.org and find the link.
