Fish Fest 2009
On Saturday July 25, 2009 from 8:00 A.M. to Noon, memories were made and fun was had by all at the first ever Fish Fest that took place at the Doddridge County Middle and Elementary School pond. Fish Fest is part of West Union Fest, which is celebrated on Friday and Saturday following July 21st every year.
The 7- acre pond provided 4 hours of excellent fishing for the16 participants. The participants ranged in age from 2-1/2 years and up. All participants received T-shirts and were eligible for door prizes. A total of 79 fish were checked in, even though this seems to be a lot, several older anglers caught numerous fish and did not check them in. When asked about this, they said they were there just to fish and to see the kids win. I applaud them for that because they are truly fishermen in my book. The species of fish caught included largemouth bass, bluegill, bullhead (catfish), and crappie. All fish were released healthy back to the pond.
Trophies were provided by Britton Gospel Mission Church of Sunnyside and were presented at the Wall of Honor on Main Street at 1:00 P.M. The largest bass trophy went to Erik Davisson, with a length of 13 1/8. Erik also won the overall biggest fish trophy with the same fish. Cody Arthur caught the largest catfish (bullhead) which measured 12 , and Devon Arthur won the overall most fish caught, with total of 29.
Other activities were available other than fishing with special thanks to the West Virginia Chapter Muskies, Inc. and to local professional BASS angler James Adams.
Muskies, Inc. had a boat on hand to teach boat safety to anyone interested and also gave out gifts to the children.
James Adams of Smithburg, W.Va. also had his boat there and had a display of lures and attractants for sale by E & J Distributing. James donated some fish attractants for door prizes. To meet James and to see what he has to sale, give him a call at his office 304-873-2670 or cell 304-481-2259.
Stoneys Sporting Goods of Sunnyside provided door prizes: A youth fishing pole, lures and a singing Largemouth Billy Bass.
Staples of Emily Drive, Clarksburg provided the development of film.
John Post, teacher at the Middle School provided a wonderful display of refreshments and snacks for sale to help support the upkeep of the pond. He also helped in the measuring of the fish.
Galen Grumpy Ash, a fine angler and collector of old fishing lures, provided the use of scales to weigh the fish, but unfortunately we were unable to get them to work. If you have any old lures to sell or if you would like to know something about them, I am sure Grumpy could help you out. Give him a call at 304-782-2324.
Special Thanks goes to Lipscomb family members who volunteered their time in helping with the cleanup and the tournament, Clarence, Hedy, Douglas, and Marty.
A Very Special Thank You goes to the Doddridge County Board Of Education for the use of the pond that made so many wonderful memories.
I personally would like to thank everyone who participated or was associated in anyway with Fish Fest.
